Cadwell Corners, the nearly vacant shopping center on the northeast corner of Waukegan and Lake Cook roads, will become the temporary home of the Deerfield Public Library.
Library Board President Ken Abosch announced the board’s choice at Monday’s Village Board meeting.
“We have signed a letter of intent to lease the space formerly occupied by the Honquest Furniture Outlet, although we are still negotiating the final details,” he said.
“We hope to be moving the entire collection, not most of it, there in May.”
The Library Board has been seeking a site where it could temporarily re-locate the library’s materials while its $12 million expansion and renovation takes place.
They had whittled a list of choices down to two, but kept the possibilities secret to negotiate with the owners of the two sites for the best possible price.
Both properties were vacant and could be moved into when the library was ready. Both spaces under consideration were about 20,000 square feet, smaller than the 32,000-square-foot facility the library’s collections are housed in now, Abosch said.
Village Trustee Mary Meirose Oppenheim noted that the site at 7 N. Waukegan Road was a good choice, because it has plenty of parking and easy access, with traffic lights at the corner.
