20 Lake Villa students injured in I-94 bus crash

DEERFIELD — Minor injuries were reported from an accident involving two trucks and a Lake Villa school bus on Interstate 94 near Deerfield Wednesday morning.
More than a dozen ambulances were dispatched to the crash on southbound I-94 about 100 yards south of Deerfield Road, according to an Illinois State Police Tollway District sergeant.
Twenty of the 43 children on the bus were injured, but none of the injuries seem to be life-threatening, Moore said.
Six of the least-injured patients were taken to Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital, and three minors and one adult were transported to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital with minor complaints, according to the hospitals.
The rest were taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center and NorthShore’s Highland Park and Glenbrook hospitals, Moore said.
At 9:36 a.m. one box truck rear-ended a second truck, which then struck the bus, said Illinois State Police Sgt. Timothy Moore.
The Durham School Services bus was loaded with seventh-graders from Palombi Middle School was traveling in a caravan with other school buses to a Chicago Wolves hockey game at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, said Lake Villa School District 41 Superintendent John Van Pelt.
A spokeswoman for the district said all of the children who were not taken to the hospital returned to the school.
Durham School Services spokesman Blaine Krage said in addition to the bus that was hit from behind, one of the trucks also knocked the side mirror off a second bus.
The vehicles remained upright, Moore said, but all the vehicles involved had to be towed.
Neither of the truck drivers were taken to hospitals, Moore said. He added that citations are pending against the truck driver who made initial contact. He also said there were no signs of alcohol or drug use, and the truck driver did not appear impaired.
