Max Bellmore of Evanston likes hearing the jingle jangle of Salvation Army bell ringers outside of Bennison’s Bakery at 1000 Davis St. The cheerful music matches Bellmore’s resounding personality. He’s 24, born in Evanston and raised in north suburban Libertyville. Working at Bennison’s keeps Bellmore on his toes in front of the customers. When he’s not serving s’more tarts or coffee, Bellmore hits the books (via a four-month program) to study for the EMT test which he’ll take in spring. The 2011 Ripon College business degree graduate and his Treeing Walker coonhound Cohdee enjoy the Evanston Dog Beach at Church Steet.
Q. When did your dream of becoming a firefighter begin?
A. You know it all started out, I’d say, two years ago when I was really looking into what I really wanted to do with my life. Oh man, I don’t just think I could sit down at a desk all day. I don’t think that’s me, so I wanted something a little bit more physically, you know, demanding as a job. In all respect to firefighters, they’re all just awesome. So I look up to these guys as something that I strive to be some day.
Q. Are firefighters heroes?
A. Of course. All of them, all of them are … I mean, they risk their necks every day just to make sure everybody is safe.
Q. Max are you going to be a hero?
A. Some day! I really want to pursue to be a firefighter. I want to be a hero but ... I don’t think there are any buts. It’s a, it’s a, yeah, I’m going to be a hero someday. It’s not easy sometimes to think about who wants to run inside a burning building. At the same time, someone has to do it. I really strive to make people happy. I think that’s like, the ultimate task to me, so you know, being a hero, I mean it’s not like something that I think about, but I do want to make a difference at the end of the day.
Q. Max, what is love?
A. Love is one of the most beautiful things in life and could also be the most heartbreaking thing in life. Love is, I mean, true love is unconditional. I love my dog. I love my family. That’s unconditional, but you can also go beyond love as something truly special that you can share with somebody.
Q. One last time. Max, are you ready to be a hero?
A. Absolutely. Now thinking about it, I’m for sure going to be more of a hero than I am today. It’s going to take a lot of work, but I am absolutely up for the challenge. And yes. I will be a hero.
