Thanks for the support!
For the last eight years, I have had the pleasure to work in District 109 on behalf of Deerfield children. In the next few weeks, I will be completing a career in education that has lasted nearly 40 years. I am honored to be finishing that career in this wonderful community where, like nowhere else, every facet of the community honors and respects children and creates a community that is the perfect place to raise a family.
I appreciate the talented and dedicated colleagues who work tirelessly in our schools every day to ensure that each student is valued and appropriately challenged. The teachers are compassionate and have educational expertise to create nurturing environments for every student. They are supported by excellent assistants and support staff who feel connected to the staff, students and families. They are led by the most talented administrative team I have worked with.
I am thankful, too, for the dedicated and smart community members who have served on the Board of Education. Their discussions, questions, and evaluations have challenged me and encouraged me to always focus on what is best for children. The PTO presidents and other parent volunteers also have been incredible leaders and advocates for the students, and a pleasure to work with. I have often said that my monthly meetings with PTO Presidents Council are some of the most valuable meetings I attend.
The other public service leaders in Deerfield have been wonderful colleagues who share my dedication to children. The boards, trustees, staff and leaders of the Village, Park District, Library and, of course, District 113, have been partners in serving our community’s families. I have enjoyed working with each of them.
I am especially honored and overwhelmed by the generosity of this community in supporting the Bernie’s Book Bank book drive. I am amazed (though not surprised) that they collected over 22,000 books! This community’s capacity to actively care about children shows no bounds.
Thank you for this incredible honor; I know that many children in need will receive books to encourage them to develop a love for reading.
As I leave the position of superintendent, I thank you all for being partners on behalf of our children. Although I look forward to the next phase of my life, I will miss all of the wonderful people who have shared the last eight years with me. I am leaving with a smile, knowing that this District, and the staff and students, will continue to excel with your incredible support.
