Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit in Lincolnshire has an annual tree-cutting party in Elkhorn, Wis., that includes family activities at the Lutherdale Bible Camp as well as a trip to JM Tree farm where the church Christmas tree is cut down.
The tradition started in Lake Geneva with church member Alden Mose.
For 25 years, Mose invited families into his home for a Christmas celebration.
When Mose was unable to continue the tradition, Vic Larson developed a new one, with church families traveling to Elkhorn, where they could gather at the Lutherdale Bible Camp for food and games, visit the tree farm to pick out not only the church Christmas tree but their own, and then end the visit with a group dinner back at the camp.
All the trees are delivered to their homes the next day.
The church Christmas tree is put up a few days afterwards, and trimmed with homemade chrismons, ornaments made from Styrofoam and decorative pins, each one symbolizing God.
According to the church website, chrimon is made up of the words Christ and monogram.
