Children

District 106 holds kindergarten registration for the 2012-2013 school year at Bannockburn School. Parents of children who will be 5 years of age on or before Sept. 1, 2012 may stop by the Bannockburn School office prior to Feb. 15, between 8:30-3:30 p.m. to pick up a registration packet and sign up for kindergarten screening. District 109 holds kindergarten registration Feb. 15 from 1-7 p.m. at the District Center, 517 Deerfield Road in Deerfield. If your child will be five years old on or before Sept. 1, 2012, attend District 109 kindergarten registration for 2012-2013 kindergartners. Come to the District Center 1-7 p.m. Feb. 15. If you haven’t already received a packet from your child’s school, review the registration packet online for the checklist of information you must bring to register your child. If unable to register on Feb. 15, call the District Center at (847) 945-1844 to make an appointment to register as soon as possible after Feb. 15 (and before March 1). It’s important for staffing and planning that the District have an accurate count of incoming kindergarten students. AM/PM kindergarten assignments are made in May 2012 and not based on early arrival at registration.

The Riverside Foundation holds benefit gala “A Midwinter Night’s Dream” 6:30 p.m.-midnight, Feb. 25 at the Marriott Lincolnshire Resort. Riverside Foundation is a not-for-profit organization that provides intellectually and developmentally disabled adults with the highest standard of care and a meaningful life experience through its residential facility in Lincolnshire and its work/activity center in Vernon Hills. Deerfield Public Schools District 109 participates in an ongoing process of locating, identifying and evaluating children who show delays in: Cognitive development; social, emotional or behavioral skills; speech; language; fine or gross motor development; pre-academic skills, vision; or hearing. Mari Krasney and Elaine Silberman, two of the art teachers with the Deerfield Park District, offer an array of programs for artists of all ages. Children as young as 4.5 years through adults of all ages will find art classes geared to their types and levels of interest. For the youngest artists, 4.5-6 years of age, art classes at Jewett Park Community Center are offered in both eight-week sessions for Media Mania, Meet the Masters, Clay Play, and Munch with Lunch and in “mini-classes” that are just one to three weeks in length, such as Multi-Media Art, Sculpture Construction, Art from Around the World, and Clay and Multi Media. Some of the above classes are offered at times that allow children in preschool to attend art classes before or after their Preschool Program. Art Reunion for children 5-8 years of age. Registration for Winter Classes at Deerfield Park District: Walk-In. Registration and resumed online registration continues until winter sessions are underway. “Horse Crazy Girls” (Activity #252524) offers activities for girls in grades 6-8 and high school to interact with horses primarily on the ground at Equestrian Connection, 600 N. SHIP volunteers available free of charge to interpret and resolve problems with medical bills, Medicare, Medicare supplemental insurance, and/or appeals etc., and can explain the Medicare Prescription Drug Plan. Volunteers available by appointment on second and fourth Tuesdays of each month, and on a drop-in basis 10 a.m.-noon first Monday of each month.

The Blue Bag Program, the Patty Turner Center, and Deerfield-Bannockburn Fire Department’s paramedics, collaborate to ensure that an individual’s wishes are honored at a time of medical emergency. The bag with copies (not originals) of a list of medications, advance directives, Do Not Resuscitate orders, emergency contacts, identification and insurance cards is placed in a home’s refrigerator where medical and emergency personnel know to find it. The information goes with the patient to the hospital via ambulance staff. This is an optional program and individuals may elect to complete all suggested documents or only what they want. Adult Caregiver Education and Support is held 1:15-2:30 p.m. the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at the Patty Turner Center. SE Lake County Faith in Action volunteers provide trained individuals to stay with a loved one while you attend meetings, free of charge. Blood-pressure/blood-sugar testing conducted at 9:30 a.m. the first Tuesday of each month in the center lobby.

Massage therapy (a half-hour or one-hour session). A 24-hour cancellation notice is required or individuals are billed for the appointment. A half-hour massage is $35 for Patty Turner Center members; $40 for non-members. A one-hour massage is $60 for Patty Turner Center members; $70 for non-members.

Lending Closet offers wheelchairs, walkers, canes, bath benches, commodes and grabber sticks on a short-term basis. Closet hours: 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

Senior Care Program: The Patty Turner Center offers a drop-off/pick-up service for older adults in Deerfield, Lincolnshire, Bannockburn and Riverwoods area. Service is available by reservation on a first-come, first-served basis.

North Shore Rhythmics provides rhythmic gymnastics training. Preschool NSR classes are 10-10:45 a.m. Saturdays. Children 5 years of age and older may sign up for Beginning Rhythmic Gymnastics. Classes are 4-5 p.m. Tuesdays or Thursdays, 5-6 p.m. Wednesdays, and 11 a.m.-noon Saturdays. For gymnasts 6 years old and above, Advanced Beginning Rhythmic Gymnastics is held 5-6:15 p.m. Tuesdays. Religion

The Jewish National Fund of Chicago, an organization dedicated to caring for the land of Israel and bettering the quality of life for all its residents, and the U.S. Forest Service, are hosting Tu BiShvat Family Celebration 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Feb. 12, at Chicagoland Jewish High School, 1095 Lake Cook Road, Deerfield. More than 500 members of Chicagoland’s Jewish community are expected to attend the free Family Celebration this year, showing support for Israel and bringing awareness to global environmental issues. Scholarships

Applications accepted through March 1 for the $2,000 Allen Meyer Memorial Scholarship to be awarded to one high school senior in the Vernon Area Public Library District by Friends of the Library. Applicants must live within the Vernon Area Public Library District, have been accepted into a higher education program for 2012-2013, and either have been an employee or volunteer at the library or be able to demonstrate how the library has affected their life or educational goals. Applicants must submit a completed online form and provide a letter of reference, a letter of acceptance, and a copy of their most recent high school transcripts.
