For three days — Feb. 25, 26 and 27 — Moriah Congregation in Deerfield will present more than 50 internationally acclaimed artists from North America and Israel at its 2012 All Judaic Art & Jewelry Fair. Among the celebrated artists whose work Moriah Congregation is featuring this year are Avi Biran (silver), Ilan Hasson (wall art), and Noa Goren-Amir (jewelry). Baby-sitting will be offered on Sunday. Parking and a free shuttle bus service will be available at Northbook Court’s lower level, east of Neiman-Marcus on both Saturday night and Sunday. Adult admission is $10 and covers all three days. The fair runs 8 to 11:30 p.m. Feb. 25, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 26 and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 27 at Moriah Congregation, 200 Taub Drive.
Orphans of the Storm animal shelter brings back their cat adoption event, Catmania! All types, ages and breeds of cats are available for adoption at this catfest. Riverside Foundation is a not-for-profit organization that provides intellectually and developmentally disabled adults with the highest standard of care and a meaningful life experience through its residential facility in Lincolnshire and its work/activity center in Vernon Hills. Deerfield Public Schools District 109 participates in an ongoing process of locating, identifying and evaluating children who show delays in: Cognitive development; social, emotional or behavioral skills; speech; language; fine or gross motor development; pre-academic skills, vision; or hearing. If your child is from birth to age 5 and you are unsure that your child is meeting age-appropriate developmental milestones and would like to participate in an early childhood screening, contact District 109 to register and schedule appointment. Children as young as 4.5 years through adults of all ages will find art classes geared to their types and levels of interest. For the youngest artists, 4.5-6 years of age, art classes at Jewett Park Community Center are offered in both eight-week sessions for Media Mania, Meet the Masters, Clay Play, and Munch with Lunch and in “mini-classes” that are just one to three weeks in length, such as Multi-Media Art, Sculpture Construction, Art from Around the World, and Clay and Multi Media. SHIP volunteers available free of charge to interpret and resolve problems with medical bills, Medicare, Medicare supplemental insurance, and/or appeals etc., and can explain the Medicare Prescription Drug Plan. Volunteers available by appointment on second and fourth Tuesdays of each month, and on a drop-in basis 10 a.m.-noon first Monday of each month.
The Blue Bag Program, the Patty Turner Center, and Deerfield-Bannockburn Fire Department’s paramedics, collaborate to ensure that an individual’s wishes are honored at a time of medical emergency. The bag with copies (not originals) of a list of medications, advance directives, Do Not Resuscitate orders, emergency contacts, identification and insurance cards is placed in a home’s refrigerator where medical and emergency personnel know to find it. The information goes with the patient to the hospital via ambulance staff. This is an optional program and individuals may elect to complete all suggested documents or only what they want. Adult Caregiver Education and Support is held 1:15-2:30 p.m. the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at the Patty Turner Center. SE Lake County Faith in Action volunteers provide trained individuals to stay with a loved one while you attend meetings, free of charge. Senior Care Program: The Patty Turner Center offers a drop-off/pick-up service for older adults in Deerfield, Lincolnshire, Bannockburn and Riverwoods area. Service is available by reservation on a first-come, first-served basis.
North Shore Rhythmics provides rhythmic gymnastics training. Preschool NSR classes are 10-10:45 a.m. Saturdays. Children 5 years of age and older may sign up for Beginning Rhythmic Gymnastics. Scholarships
The YWCA Lake County seeks applications for the Dr. Minnie J. Leggette Young Woman of Achievement Scholarship. This $1,000 scholarship will be awarded at the 34th Annual YWCA Women of Achievement Awards Dinner on June 8, 2012. The scholarship provides financial opportunities for a high school senior girl who lives and attends school in Lake County and is college-bound. Applicants are to submit the required form and information to the YWCA Lake County no later than March 12, 2012. A selection committee will review the applications and announce a decision in April. The Norwegian National League of Chicago offers scholarships and cash prizes to deserving students who are of Norwegian heritage residing in Cook, Lake, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, McHenry and Will counties. First scholarship is $1,000 to be awarded to a high school senior with a minimum of 3.0 GPA who has been accepted by a college or university. A $200 cash prize will be awarded to a high school student in grades nine to 11 and a $50 cash prize awarded to a student in grades fifth through eighth. A $25 cash prize will be awarded to a student in grades first through fourth. Older students must submit an original essay on a Norwegian topic and the students in grades first through fourth must submit an original drawing depicting a Norwegian topic. Elizabeth Walder, Esq., with her attorneys and staff, announces the “Immigrants Aspire!” scholarships and essay competition. Three scholarship awards _ a grand prize of $2,000 and two runner-up prizes of $500 — will be payable directly to each winning student’s college or university. Winners will be honored at a special reception and their essays featured on the Immigration Law Associates website. Contestants must prepare a 750-1,000 word essay on the topic, “If you could make one major change in the immigration laws, what would it be and why?” Essays must be in English. Entrants must be graduating high school seniors residing in Illinois who will be entering an institution of higher learning in the fall of 2012. They must be immigrants themselves or have at least one immigrant parent or stepparent. Applications accepted through March 1 for the $2,000 Allen Meyer Memorial Scholarship to be awarded to one high school senior in the Vernon Area Public Library District by Friends of the Library. Applicants must live within the Vernon Area Public Library District, have been accepted into a higher education program for 2012-2013, and either have been an employee or volunteer at the library or be able to demonstrate how the library has affected their life or educational goals. Applicants must submit a completed online form and provide a letter of reference, a letter of acceptance, and a copy of their most recent high school transcripts.
