The Deerfield School District 109 Board has scheduled several meetings focusing on special education.
To get information from parents of special education students, the special education agenda that was to be presented at the board’s Jan. 23 committee of the whole meeting has been rescheduled to the regular Feb. 13 meeting.
The board also will host three meetings to tell parents of special education students more about programs and processes, and for board members to hear parent comments, questions and concerns.
The Wednesday, Jan. 25, meeting will be for parents of special education students at Kipling and Walden elementary schools.
The Monday, Jan. 30, meeting will be for parents of special education students at South Park and Wilmot elementary schools.
And the Wednesday, Feb. 1, meeting will be for the parents of middle school special education students.
All the meetings are at 7 p.m. The locations will be determined.
The meetings will be led by Student Services Director Jenell Mroz; Special Education Program Coordinator Maggie Wade; Learning Assistant Superintendent Paula Owsiak; and the student services coordinators of the schools.
Information presented will include:
Laws governing special education and how they affect the district;
The status of the district’s special education programs and processes;
The review process for improving programs and service delivery.
After the presentation, parents and staff will gather in small groups to discuss building-specific information, and for parents to give feedback on their child’s programming, including what’s working, what isn’t and how it can be improved.
Parents will learn how they can provide input on their child’s programming by working with their individualized education plan (IEP) team.
The board has planned time for questions and answers.
The meeting agenda will be posted on the district’s home page at www.dps109.org under “News/Upcoming Events.”
