Deerfield business carves out a niche in engraving

DEERFIELD — Paul Greenberger has proof that his Deerfield-based engraving shop is popular.
“See that little Google map that says, ‘Favorite Place?’” Greenberger asked. “I didn’t make that. Google made that for us because I was getting so many (Internet) hits locally.”
Greenberger has been in the jewelry and engraving business for more than 30 years. He explained that the uniqueness of Everything Engravable is what sets his business apart from the rest. That’s because he caters to specific Jewish, Hebrew and Christian engraving needs.
Greenberger also said he offers convenience to his customers by operating two websites for his business, which is great for local customers because he calls them once their Internet order is ready for pick-up.
“It saves so much time,” Greenberger said.
“One of my websites, www.PersonalizedJewishGifts.com, is potentially the only site like it in the U.S., as well as possibly the world, that has a mouse-activated Hebrew keyboard on it,” Greenberger explained.
While he has a physical shop, at 420 Lake-Cook Road, with dozens of metal gifts ranging from jewelry boxes to rings, Greenberger reported that he does the bulk of his business from the online orders.
“It took me two and a half years to make the Judaic (engraving) program,” Greenberger said. “If you find anyone else who does Hebrew engraving, they’ll tell you to work from left to right, which means, if you know anything about Hebrew, you’re doing it backward. My program works exactly the way it is supposed to.”
Greenberger also does custom jewelry designs — one of which is protected by a U.S. patent. That item is his daughter’s Sweet 16 ring, and it’s on display in the store.
“I did it for her Sweet 16 and realized I had something that people would be interested in,” Greenberger said.
He described the way a hidden “16” is subtlety designed into the ring.
“You just don’t find anything you can wear your entire life that doesn’t scream Sweet 16,” Greenberger said. “It was patented on Jan. 6, 1998.”
Greenberger operated a jewelry store, My Son the Jeweler, in downtown Deerfield for 25 years. Four years ago, he changed his focus to the engraving businesses.
