Deerfield considers recycling proposal, car charging stations

DEERFIELD — A proposed tax levy increase, contracts for recycling for Deerfield businesses and electric car charging stations were hot topics at the village of Deerfield’s committee of the whole meeting Monday night.
Jenny Maltin, assistant to the village manager, said she has been in contact with most all Deerfield businesses about their recycling needs – and determining whether the village should vote on a request for proposal from haulers.
Both David Levitz, chairman of the Deerfield, Bannockburn, Riverwoods Chamber of Commerce, and several Deerfield trustees agree that an aggregated business recycling program would be a “win-win.”
However, Bob Fister, of Advanced Disposal, cautioned the committee that taking extra hauling trucks off the street means taking drivers off the street as well.
“A driver loses his job,” Fister said. “It’s very easy to say we’re taking trucks off the street, but you have to understand it is a driver and a real person.”
Mayor Harriett Rosenthal said RFP’s are not easy processes, but the village’s objective should be to make it as easy and cost-effective as possible. The move to vote on an RFP will appear on a future village agenda, Rosenthal said.
The committee also set a date of Dec. 3 for a truth in taxation hearing for the village’s proposed tax levy.
The committee also discussed the idea of installing electric car charging stations in various lots throughout the village. However, that would have to come with approval from owners of the lots. Another issue discussed was how to pay for it, and who would be responsible.
The department of public works and RedZone, a company who builds robots and data systems for inspecting sewerage pipes, also gave a presentation on utilizing the technology to detect problems in village piping. That proposal and the electric charging station exploration will appear on future agendas, the committee agreed.
The next village board meeting will be Monday, Dec. 3 at Village Hall.
