Just last winter, Deerfield moms Marianna Kurzydlo and Jennifer Templeton noticed how difficult it was for some families to keep up with everyday tasks. While out walking together one day, they came up with a solution: an errand-running service for the North Shore. Twenty-three chambers of commerce came together last Friday for the fifth annual North Shore Women’s Conference at the Marriott Resort in Lincolnshire. Women-owned businesses including banks, educational services and health care companies were represented. The conference featured Catherine Johns, business coach and former radio personality at WLS AM, as the keynote speaker. Johns talked about the importance of language in business. “As women, we often default to soft language,” she said. Teacher hopes to make Deerfield art workshop a place to learn

A new, offbeat option for art classes, parties, or just an afternoon of fun is coming to Deerfield Park Plaza. Cre8 Workshop, a 2,000 square-foot creative arts workspace, will offer workshops, open workspace and classes in craft making, scrap-booking, jewelry making and other creative arts projects for people of all ages. Cre8 Workshop is slated to open in June. “You don’t have to be a crafter. We’ll teach anybody,” said Donna Price, owner of Cre8 Workshop. Charter One adds mortgage loan officers

Charter One has announced the appointment of three new mortgage loan officers to its Illinois mortgage team. Michael Chlada joins Charter One as a Mortgage Loan Officer based in Hinsdale. Chlada originates a wide range of mortgage loan programs, including both conventional and government loans. He has been in the mortgage business for five years. He comes to Charter One from Baytree National Bank, where he was a real estate lending consultant. Beam Inc. has announced a definitive agreement with White Rock Distilleries to acquire the fast-growing Pinnacle Vodka and Calico Jack rum brands and other related assets for $605 million in cash. Best Buy to close in Deerfield

Best Buy’s Deerfield store will close permanently before May 12, according to a press release from the company. The store at 200 S. Waukegan is one of the main anchors of the Deerbrook Shopping Center at Waukegan and Deerfield roads, which has been plagued by businesses closing in the last few months. Wonder, 250 S. Waukegan Road, just a few doors south, shut down in February. Woodfire Chicken, 360 Lake Cook Road, closed at the end of March. Two prospective tenants are considering opening businesses at Deerfield’s former Woodfire Chicken restaurant site. Both would like to open eating places in the now empty 52,000-square-foot building at 360 Lake Cook Road, near the heavily traveled intersection of Lake Cook and Waukegan roads.
