North Shore’s first recovery high school to open in Lake Bluff

The area’s first high school for teens recovering from alcohol and drug addiction, eating disorders or other mental health issues will open in Lake Bluff June 3. Newport Academy Day School will be the first recovery high school serving Chicago’s North Shore teens, age 15 to 19.

DEERFIELD — Although for different reasons, both Harvey Cohen and Bonnie Shlensky felt it was simply “the right time” to step down from the Township High School District 113 Board of Education. Cohen, 70, of Highland Park and Shlensky, 51, of Deerfield presided over their final meeting as board members on May 6 after a combined total of 24 years of service. Cheerleading squad takes the floor Fifteen College of Lake County students, former rivals at high school cheerleading competitions, have formed a new Lancer Cheerleading Club, which gaåve its first public performance at men’s and women’s home basketball games on Jan. 17. Teresa Aguinaldo, interim executive director of Student Life, said she is excited about the revival of cheerleading at CLC after a long hiatus. Deerfield students raise $135,000 for LUNGevity

DEERFIELD — Shattering its original fund-raising goal of $100,000, Deerfield High School’s School Chest raised $135,393.17 for its chosen charity, LUNGevity. A LUNGevity representative told the students that the amount will fund more than a year of lung cancer research. “I was just in awe and overwhelmed over what we just found out,” said Samantha Gottstein, who co-chaired the campaign with Graham Ambrose. “I was more surprised than emotional.” Gottstein said she “emotionally lost it” when the announcement came out. “I just started crying,” she said. “I was overjoyed by everything.” Before school dismissed for winter break Dec. 20, members …

District 113: Master Plan approved, now defining scope

The District 113 Board of Education adopted a Long-Range Facility Master Plan for Deerfield and Highland Park High Schools at its Dec. 10 meeting. Board members now report that the next step is determining which part of the plan they will seek to implement and how they will fund these projects. The School Board and a steering committee — made up of community members with architecture and construction experience — spent a significant amount of time prioritizing projects.
