If someone had told you it would take 20 runs to win Thursday’s Deerfield-Lake Forest 3A regional semifinal baseball game, you’d be right. In a score more reflective of the football gridiron than the baseball diamond, the host Warriors outlasted the Scouts 22-19 on a hot, blustery afternoon that stretched well into the evening. One of the great things about sports is the immediate gratification. There is always a final score. But the work leading up that result is anything but immediate. It’s gradual, often tedious. Take the Deerfield boys track team. The Warriors had arguably the best day in the history of the program at last Thursday’s Class 3A sectional meet at Loyola Academy, qualifying competitors in six events: 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles, 800, 3200, 4x200 relay and 4x400 relay. Two of the top guards in the Pioneer Press Lake Shore area will be teaming up next season. Highland Park head basketball coach Paul Harris has confirmed that all-conference guard Jake Norcia will play his college basketball at Augustana. Norcia, who averaged a team-best 14.5 points per game, will be joined in the backcourt by Libertyville’s Griffin Pils (16.6). Both players came up with impressive senior seasons. Dylan Richter, a senior guard for Washington University, has been named to the 2012 Jewish Sports Review Men’s Basketball All-America First Team. The Lincolnshire native had a stellar final season with the St. Louis school. He earned honorable mention All-America honors by D3hoops.com after being named the Universtiy Athletic Association’s Player of the Year. College Baseball: Deerfield grad Goldstick has stellar freshman season with Washington U.

He was a tough out. Deerfield High School graduate Andrew Goldstick, a freshman shortstop for Washington University in St. Louis, struck out only four times in 119 at-bats this season. In 34 starts at short, he batted .353. His numbers were good across the board: 42 hits, 26 runs and 25 RBI. For his efforts, Goldstick was rewarded by being named a first-team selection on the all-University Athletic Association (UAA) team. He was one of five Washington players to earn all-conference honors, including Player of the Year Brandon Rogalski. Goldstick also was terrific in the field. He had 100 assists, …
