In a repeat of the top three finishers from last season, Lake Zurich’s boys bowling team won the Stevenson Sectional on Saturday, advancing to next weekend’s IHSA state tournament at St. Clair Bowl in downstate O’Fallon. The Bears finish with a 6,423.
Vernon Hills finished in second place (6,391), grabbing the other state-qualifying spot.
For the second year in a row, Deerfield missed advancing, placing third with a 6,011.
Stevenson wound up fourth (5,989), while Libertyville was seventh (5,677).
On the individual side, three of the four bowlers who advanced last year made it again this year. Lake Zurich’s Mike Schmitt won with a total of 1,469 pins. Vernon Hills’ Eric Swanson took second with 1,389 pins, while Deerfield’s Zach Cole finished in third place with a 1,332. LZ’s Max Galarce placed fourth (1,320), while Libertyville’s Jake Thompson was fifth (1,291).
Deerfield’s Quinn Thomas, last year’s sectional winner, finished in 24th place (1,196).
Stevenson’s top performer was senior Brenden Horwitz, who ended his career by tying for seventh place overall (1,270) with Lake Zurich’s Tony Giannecchini. Senior Arnie Nadel finished in 16th place (1229).
The Cougars jumped ahead early with a 105 pin advantage after the first game. But the Bears seized control in the fifth game, knocking down 1,048 pins, ninety more than Vernon Hills.
“The last four tournaments we’ve been in the top three so to finally get that win off our back is a big achievement,” said Lake Zurich head coach Peter Kupfer. “I told the kids all the work we’ve done all year has paid off.”
