Though Deerfield High School has a relatively young team, coach John Sullivan has one veteran swimmer on hand — junior Daniel Perlovsky.

“He is very consistent,” Sullivan said. “You know he will give you what you expect.”

Sullivan expected a strong performance from Perlovsky in the 200-yard IM during a tight dual meet against Glenbrook North in Deerfield on Friday. In what proved to be a critical race, Perlovsky delivered, and the Warriors edged the Spartans 96-90.

While most of the meet’s races were close, Perlovsky won the event by more than three seconds, finishing in a personal-best 2:11.19.

“He attacked the front end and just raced,” Sullivan said. “He really stepped up. From start to finish, he was in control.”

Perlovsky also turned in a strong performance in the 200 medley relay, helping Deerfield (3-0, 2-0 CSL North) garner critical points. The strong quartet included Kevin Ewing, Marc Stern and Chris Roberts (1:43.22).

What was an exciting dual meet went down to the final race, the 400 freestyle relay. Ewing, Joey Barr, Alex Howard and Roberts narrowly edged Glenbrook North at the finish. The foursome finished in 3:24.24, while the Spartans (3:24.65) were a close second.

In diving, Ryan Church (204.85) and Jon Bromberg (166.90) finished 1-2. Sean Scopelliti placed third in the 200 IM.

“Jon getting up for second was a huge start to turn the tide for us,” Sullivan said. “Sean put his head down and finished strong. That was really big for us.”

Other Warriors winners included Ewing in the 100 backstroke (54.33) and the 200 free (1:47.63), Perlovsky in the 200 IM (2:11.19), Roberts in the 50 free (22.92) and Stern in the 100 fly (55.25).

“The whole team stepped up,” Sullivan said.

The Warriors also received a fourth-place finish by Roberts in the 50 freestyle (22.86) — and the 400 medley relay team of Ewing, Perlovsky, Stern and Barry finished fourth in 1:08.57.

Ewing participated in three elimination heats in both the 50 and 100 free, qualifying for the finals and finishing sixth in each race (23.88 and 51.80, respectively).

“That’s a lot of races for Kevin — going back-to back-to-back,” Sullivan said. “He’s right on track for us.”

On the schedule: The Warriors visit Niles North for a Central Suburban League North dual meet, beginning at 5 p.m. Friday. The diving portion will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Deerfield then will participate in the Hersey Invitational at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
